UK Landscape Award 2010

Learning from the first round

Obviously we do not know what the judges thought of each entry; nor do we know whether the judges will take the same view in 2011 as they did in 2009. However the following observations may be of use to UK candidates:

In 2009 both the winning entry (France) and the highly commended entry (Spain):

  • had a very high standard of presentation;
  • were long-term projects which had been adding social, economic, cultural, aesthetic and biodiversity value to their regions steadily over a period of years; and
  • demonstrated a high level of public engagement in their development and a significant amount of public benefit in their outcomes.

The Turkish entry was mostly about biodiversity, and perhaps did not sufficiently emphasise social or economic development, or landscape as a cultural asset.

The Slovenian entry appears to have been highly academic, and to have involved little public engagement.

The Czech entry presumably scored highly on public engagement and on public benefit, but may have scored less in sustainability, biodiversity and other areas.
